Curriculum Viate: M. Searle

I am interested in research and evaluation that builds capacity

in our educational communities and makes a difference for student

learning. By conducting research and evaluation I strive to connect

the world of theory with the world of practice in meaningful ways.

In June 2013, I completed my PhD at Queen’s University, Faculty of Education. My doctoral studies looked at the intersection of curriculum, assessment and evaluation through a study focused on a district-wide evaluation of a program designed to reduce school violence. Results from this study have allowed me to craft insights about the experience of fusing systematic research and evaluation with elements of arts-informed inquiry.

Over the last seven years I have been involved collaboration on 15 research and evaluation projects investigating many of the key tenets within education. I have developed and/or taught 23 courses as part of pre-service and in-service education for teachers at Western University and at Queen’s University. These courses span a range of areas, including: self-regulated learning, social science inquiry methods in the classroom, classroom assessment, issues in equity and exceptionalities, international teaching, and drama curriculum. For the past two years, much of my research work has taken place with the Thames Valley District School Board on a Ministry of Education funded project.

Prior to pursuing doctoral work, I completed my Bachelor of Education and Master’s of Education at Queen’s University as well as her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Literature at the University of Western Ontario. I have worked as an educator in Grades 2-12 both internationally and in Ontario for 12 years.
